The Forno Hut After 41 Years

July 21, 2015

Forno-A

41 years ago, at 6 years old, I climbed across a glacier holding onto my grandmother’s hand to reach the Forno Hut. It is located in a stunning little corner of the Swiss Alps known as the Engadine region. Since then, I have been hanging on a 6-year old’s memories of sleeping in a bunk room with strangers and having to cross a wide expanse of granite in the middle of the night, again holding my grandmother’s hand, to go pee in the outhouse perched above the hut. Last week, after 41 years, with my 10-year old son and husband in tow, I made good on my dream of making it back to the Forno. My Favorite Animal Cards

June 23, 2015

partridge

I have been collecting notecards ever since I can remember. I have shoeboxes full. I was going through them the other day and realized that over half of them contained renderings of animals – hand calligraphy, paper cutouts, etchings, watercolors, and more. I love cards because they are concise sources of inspiration. Read more >

Heavenly Miso Kale Salad

June 9, 2015

kale-8

This has to be one of my favorite kale salad recipes hands down. I make it at least once a week and it’s super easy. The original recipe came to me from a food cleanse I did, lead by Andrea Nakayama of ReplenishPDX, an amazing nutritionist here in Portland, Oregon. Read more >

Ivanya’s Graduation Quilt

June 2, 2015

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about giving the second in a series of 30 graduation quilts to a boy named Olin. It is now Ivanya’s turn, only this time, I was not able to bestow this third quilt in person. Instead, her father hand-carried it all the way to Germany where she has been finishing out her high school education. Like the first two, this quilt is made from pieces of clothing belonging to many of the adults who have watched Ivanya grow up. Congratulations to our dear Ivanya!

From Lori’s Notebook

  • Allan’s Wings

Back in the winter of 2021 when my work was featured in What Women Create Magazine, I received a lovely email from Tricia in South Carolina who was touched by the article, enough so that she saved it in her files, knowing that one day she would reach out again.

  • From Lace to Snowflakes

I was fortunate enough to have met both of my Austrian great-grandmothers.

  • Carmen’s Merienda

It is always bittersweet when previous clients get back in touch to request a memorial quilt in honor of an additional family member who has passed away.
