The Story of Three Memorial Pillows

August 28, 2015

11

I had the pleasure and honor of making a set of three memorial pillows for the grandchildren of a man who passed away six years ago. His widow described him as adventurous, kind, creative, fun-loving, and thoughtful. He also loved cars, in particular, hot rods and would go to car shows every year, often returning with a jeans jacket with that year’s design on it. It was out of two of those jackets that I made the three pillows.

We chose to focus on patch working divided sections of each jacket’s printed portion.

I made a checkerboard of printed and solid squares.

8

The jeans fabric was quite thick and required top stitching on every seam.

I used some of my ticking fabrics for the backings which added some nice patterning.

I love working on some of these smaller, more focused projects, using very specific garments that have a story all of their own.

From Lori’s Notebook

  • Mark’s van der Rohe

It’s not often that the clothing I receive for my memorial quilts so clearly reflects a person’s passion and life work.

  • Louisa’s Eclipse

I believe many of us from a certain generation can relate to having held on to a box of our mother’s or grandmother’s table linens which we don’t have the heart to discard, nor do we want to bust out our irons every time we have a dinner party.

  • A Tartan for Tasmania

After having successfully shipped my most recent quilt all the way to my client Sigrid in Tasmania, I can officially say that my work has made its way across the world.
