Dedicated to the Victims of the Nepalese Earthquake

April 28, 2015

Given the enormity of the Nepalese earthquake disaster, I am dedicating this blog post to all of the victims affected by this catastrophic event.

Shortly after the quake hit, I received an email from a Nepalese young man whom I mentored ten years ago when he was a college student here in the U.S. We have kept in touch over the years. He wrote to tell me that, thankfully, both his parents survived the quake and that he had heard from most of his other family members. He asked me to sign a petition requesting Partners in Health and the U.S. government to coordinate rescue efforts for the victims in Nepal. Here is the link to the petition at Change.org.

I also paid a visit yesterday to a close friend who works for Mercy Corps here in Portland. She had just finished going through devastating images taken within 24 hours of the quake, and she was visibly distraught by the suffering she had just witnessed through the photos. I believe Mercy Corps currently has 90 of its people over in Nepal helping with the relief effort, but they obviously could use a lot of support themselves as well. Here is the link to Mercy Corps if you are inspired to donate to the relief efforts they are spear heading.

Hands together,

Lori

I-84 from Pendleton to Hood River, Oregon

April 7, 2015

The drive from Pendleton, Oregon to Hood River, Oregon on Interstate 84 takes you from open farm land to the scenic Columbia Gorge. It’s also the major trucking route through that part of the state. I was a passenger for this entire stretch of road and became transfixed on the images I could capture out of my side window. The following are a smattering of what I took.

Amazing Cliffs from Zion to Cortez, Colorado

March 30, 2015

Traveling from Zion to Cortez, Colorado served up some crazy cool cliffs and canyons. In Zion, we took a hike up to Angel’s Landing, complete with chains to hang on to above 1000 foot drops.

Winning Vistas Between Portland and Bryce Canyon

March 23, 2015

There’s nothing like seeing the landscape of our beautiful country go by from the ground. I’m on the road with my husband and 10-year old son, traveling the Southwest by car.

What is Honey Mama’s?

March 16, 2015

One month ago, I did not know the answer to the question, and now I do, and I want to spread the word to everyone I know. Honey Mama’s Nectar Fudge is one of the most delicious treats I have tasted. A friend of my husband’s left a package of Honey Mama’s CocoNoNut Nectar Fudge in our fridge late one night with my name on it – so generous! I was not so generous when it came to sharing it with my husband (something he likes to remind me of every time I stock the fridge with new flavors I haven’t tried). I’m completely addicted.

From Lori’s Notebook

  • Mark’s van der Rohe

It’s not often that the clothing I receive for my memorial quilts so clearly reflects a person’s passion and life work.

  • Louisa’s Eclipse

I believe many of us from a certain generation can relate to having held on to a box of our mother’s or grandmother’s table linens which we don’t have the heart to discard, nor do we want to bust out our irons every time we have a dinner party.

  • A Tartan for Tasmania

After having successfully shipped my most recent quilt all the way to my client Sigrid in Tasmania, I can officially say that my work has made its way across the world.
