2017 Graduation Quilts

July 3, 2017

1

Another year, another round of graduation quilts for the special graduates in my community. For those of you who have not been following this project, I began making this series of graduation quilts for the children in my community of friends. They are made out of the clothing of all of the parents who have watched these amazing kids grow up. This is the fourth year, with a total of 8 quilts completed. Only 19 quilts and 22 years to go!

Elena and Xander were up this year, and we had a lovely ceremony, now fondly called Quilt Bestowal.

This was the first year that a previous years’ recipient helped me sew the quilt tops together. So sweet – thank you, Anona!

Here are some details from Elena’s quilt.

We chose to highlight the quilt stitching by making it contrast with the backing.

Xander is interested in computer science and will be studying the field at college next year, so I made sure to pick a quilting pattern that had a more “techie” feeling to it.

And then there is this photo, sent to me from Elena just a couple of weeks after receiving her quilt. She traveled to Germany to be with her older sister, Ivanya, whose graduation quilt (at left) I made 2 years ago. I love to see where this younger generation takes their quilts, knowing that a little bit of each of us gets to travel with them.

From Lori’s Notebook

  • Mark’s van der Rohe

It’s not often that the clothing I receive for my memorial quilts so clearly reflects a person’s passion and life work.

  • Louisa’s Eclipse

I believe many of us from a certain generation can relate to having held on to a box of our mother’s or grandmother’s table linens which we don’t have the heart to discard, nor do we want to bust out our irons every time we have a dinner party.

  • A Tartan for Tasmania

After having successfully shipped my most recent quilt all the way to my client Sigrid in Tasmania, I can officially say that my work has made its way across the world.
